What is acne?
Acne is a common skin condition that can cause spots, oily skin and sometimes painful lesions. It can involve blocked hair follicles, excess sebum, inflammation and other contributing factors. It isn't simply a matter of having "dirty skin"—and scrubbing harder isn't automatically the answer.
What you'll learn on this page
What causes acne · Common mistakes · Simple routine · Ayurvedic perspective · Product guidance · When to see a dermatologist
Acne isn't a dirt problem.
You don't need to punish your skin because you have a breakout. Acne involves processes within the hair follicles and skin, including excess sebum, dead skin-cell buildup, blocked follicles and inflammation. Washing too aggressively, scrubbing or repeatedly irritating the skin can make skin care harder rather than better.
What May Contribute to Acne?
Acne doesn't have just one cause. Different people experience acne for different reasons.
Sebum & Blocked Follicles
Excess oil and buildup inside follicles can contribute to acne formation.
Hormonal Influences
Hormonal changes can influence sebum production and acne.
Genetics
If acne runs in your family, you may be more likely to experience it.
Know Your Breakout
"Pimple" can mean several different things. Understanding the type of breakout is the first step.
Common Types
- Blackheads: Open clogged pores that appear dark at the surface.
- Whiteheads: Closed clogged pores that form small pale or flesh-coloured bumps.
- Inflamed pimples: Red, swollen lesions caused by inflammation.
Important Considerations
- Deep or painful bumps: Larger, deeper lesions may need professional assessment.
- Acne + dark marks: The breakout and the mark left afterwards are not the same concern. Acne care ≠ pigmentation care.
Stop Doing This
Before adding another product, remove these habits.
Don't scrub aggressively. More friction doesn't mean better cleansing.
Don't keep changing your routine. Your skin needs consistency.
Don't pick every pimple. Persistent picking can increase scarring.
Don't automatically dry your skin. "Squeaky clean" isn't healthy.
Don't assume "natural" means suitable. Natural can still irritate.
Don't copy routines blindly. Your skin is unique.

Where Ayurveda Fits
Traditional wisdom can guide the philosophy. It shouldn't replace evidence. At VK Varieties, we study classical Ayurvedic knowledge alongside modern scientific understanding, but we keep an important distinction: traditional Ayurvedic concepts are not automatically equivalent to modern dermatological mechanisms.
We ask: What does traditional knowledge say? What does modern evidence tell us? What can be incorporated into everyday care? Where is professional medical care appropriate?
Our Formulation Approach
01 — Understand the concern
02 — Study traditional knowledge
03 — Examine modern research
04 — Select compatible ingredients
05 — Experiment
06 — Make in small batches
This is where your genuine formulation experience becomes EEAT, without pretending home/family testing is equivalent to clinical trials.
